In November-end, Afcons Infrastructure launched their first U-girder on PDPU Road for constructing the viaduct of the 28.254 km Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project.

Workers of the project’s 14.36 km Package C1 (Motera – GNLU – GIFT) hit this milestone at GNLU between piers GP-1(25) and GP-1 (26) by erecting a 28 meter long girder weighing 164 MT. This isn’t Phase 2’s first U-girder though. Ranjit Buildcon recorded that milestone a few weeks prior on Radesan Road for Package C2.

Afcons was awarded Phase 2’s 14.36 km Package C1 in Q4 2020. Their scope includes the line’s 8.124 km elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU with 8 stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

It also includes the 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City with a bridge over Sabarmati River and 2 stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Afcons’ team had started pier work in May 2021 and plan to erect a total of 499 piers, which according to my back of the hand calculation brings the number of U-girders to roughly 970-990 as some piers will be connected via I-girders. So far, the team has cast a little above 100 U-girders and pier caps.
