L&T Awarded Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train’s C3 Contract in Maharashtra

India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) on Wednesday awarded Larsen & Toubro with a Rs. 15,697 crore contract for the construction work of 135.45 km Package C-3 of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project.

Elevated Package C3 is the longest in Maharashtra and will link Shilphata – Zaroli (chainage Km 21.150 – Km 156.600). It includes 3 elevated stations at Thane, Virar and Boisar. The construction of Thane Depot en route will be carried out via a separate civil construction contract (Package D1) which received 4 bids in May.

Larsen & Toubro beat 3 other bidders (NCC – J Kumar JV, Afcons – KPTL JV and DRA – DMRC JV) when financial bids for C-3 were opened last month. They will be chasing a 1704 day (4.66 year) construction deadline.

Here’s a copy of the Letter of Acceptance (LOA):

IFB Number: Package No. MAHSR-C-3

Brief Scope: Design and Construction of Civil and Building Works including Testing and Commissioning on Design Build Lump Sum Price Basis for Double Line High Speed Railway involving Viaducts & Bridges (excluding fabrication and transportation of steel truss girder components), Maintenance Depot, Tunnels, Earth Structures and Stations (Thane, Virar and Boisar), between Shilphata in the State of Maharashtra and Zaroli at Maharashtra-Gujarat border from MAHSR Km 21.150 to MAHSR Km 156.600 [excluding Thane Depot] for the Project for Construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail

This is L&T’s fourth win on the civil construction side of things and a contract signing ceremony is expected to take place by month-end.

With this contract squared away, L&T is now responsible for constructing 469.32 km (92.35%) of the main-line (Packages C3 + C4 + C5 + C6), all the way from Shilphata Ramp on the outskirts of Mumbai to Ahmedabad’s southern outskirts. I expect lessons learned, men and machinery deployed during C4-C6’s construction to be applied or transferred to C3.

This contract is significant as Package C3 is the final civil package of the entire project’s main-line to be awarded, and I’m so glad this phase is now finally behind us. The very 1st package of the main-line, 237.1 km Package C4, was awarded in November 2020.
