Workers from Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. this week began launching 8.5m wide segments for 23.3 km Pune Metro Line-3 project’s 1.6 km double-decker viaduct connecting Aundh Road and RBI Chowk on Ganeshkhind Road.

This integrated section of Line-3 (Megapolis Circle – Civil Court) is being built after the demolition of two flyovers at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk and E-Square Carnival intersections during the Covid-19 related lockdown of 2020.

Its construction is estimated to cost Rs. 570 crore which will be shared by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

The city’s new Line-3 with 23 elevated stations is being developed by PMRDA on PPP mode through a 35 year concession agreement signed with Tata’s TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (TRIL UTPL + SPVG).

Tata Projects Ltd (TPL) is responsible for the line’s civil construction work and had launched their first of 8232 precast segments, cast in Tathawade, in July 2022.

Motor vehicles and the local bus rapid transit (BRT) system will utilize the structure’s first level while 3-coach metro trains supplied by Alstom will run on the second level. Here’s a map I made in 2020 when the demolition of the two flyovers (shown in black and orange) was being planned:

The city’s upcoming 35.96 km High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) road project by PMC is planned to pass right between both levels as seen below:

Here’s a recent video about Line-3 uploaded on YouTube with a dedicated segment about the structure at the 6:02 mark:

Similar double-decker structures exist in varying lengths in JaipurKochiChennai, Nagpur, Pune, and are under construction in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.
