On Friday night, J Kumar Infraprojects and Sunder Cranes launched the first U-girder for completing pending construction work on the DN Nagar – IL&FS section of Mumbai Metro’s 23.6 km Line-2B (Yellow Line).

The team recorded this milestone on Swami Vivekananda Road in Santa Cruz West between piers P-225 and P-226 (view on Google Maps) using a 28 meter girder weighing 167 MT.

A contract for this 12.824 km elevated section (Package C101) with 10 stations was originally awarded to Simplex Infrastructure in 2017, but terminated in January 2020 due to poor progress on key performance indicators.

After several rounds of re-bidding, J Kumar was awarded a Rs. 1307.88 crore contract for its pending work in May 2021 with a 30 month deadline. The team was then quick to re-deploy manpower and machinery from Line-2A’s Package AC-01 where the final U-girder was launched in February 2021.

Double launch!

Meanwhile, there’s still no news on Package C102’s contract award where NCC was the lowest bidder in November. I imagine NCC and MMRDA’s executives are currently still negotiating final value and scope.
