(Pics) Agra Metro’s Underground Stations & Tunnels Take Shape

[ad_1]

With elevated station & viaduct works on Agra Metro Priority Corridor’s 3 km elevated section grabbing all eyeballs, here’s a post on 14.25 km Line-1’s 7.93 km underground section that is quietly taking shape between RBS Ramp – Taj Mahal Ramp.

This section of the 29.40 km Agra Metro Phase 1 project with twin tunnels is under construction by Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India Consortium. Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded them with Package AGCC-02’s Rs. 1819.79 crore civil construction contract in March 2022 with a 48 month deadline.

In February, the consortium commissioned Robbins TBM 215-323 at Agra Fort’s Ramleela Maidan which has so far built 65 rings (91 meters). Nicknamed TBM Yamuna, this Ø6.52m diameter and 95m long Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine is one of 4 TBMs that will be deployed.

TBM Yamuna along with another refurbished machine, TBM Ganga, will each build roughly 3 kms of tunnels of the city’s 6 km Priority Corridor (Jama Masjid – Taj East Gate) with an aim to become operational by August 2024.

Afcons-SAM’s package from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485 consists of twin tunnels connecting 7 stations at Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi and RBS College.

Excavation is underway for Raja ki Mandi’s station box, just east of Raja ki Mandi Railway Station. Some snaps:

Both Agra College and Raja ki Mandi stations are not part of Agra’s 6 km Priority Corridor. Afcons-SAM’s 3rd and 4th TBMs, which are likely to be from Herrenknecht, will be deployed to build tunnels between them and beyond, but I don’t see that happening anytime this year.

Their origin and status remains unknown. If someone reading this is aware, then leave a comment below or shoot me a message via the Contact page.
