Steel Infra Solution in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh on Wednesday completed trial assembly on a 40 meter long open web girder (OWG) bridge for Chennai Metro’s 26.09 km Line-4 which will connect Light House – Poonamallee Bypass through 30 stations.

This steel bridge weighing 222MT will be launched by Hindustan Construction Company – KEC International JV (HCC – KEC JV) on 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2‘s 7.945 km Package C4-ECV-02 connecting Porur – Poonamallee Bypass.

Details are a little sketchy, but the exact launch location will likely be over Chennai Bypass (NH-32)’s flyovers at Mount Poonamallee Road (view on Google Maps). Also looking at its width, it appears it’ll support only pair of tracks, so it’ll likely have a twin.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) had awarded Package C4-ECV-02’s Rs 1,147 crore contract to HCC – KEC JV in May 2021 with a 36 month deadline.

Besides constructing the viaduct from chainage 17982.240 to chainage 25928.186 and Poonamallee depot-line, HCC – KEC will build 9 stations at Chennai bypass crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, Poonamallee Bypass.

Their package also includes launching 11 special steel spans, the exact locations of which I’m unaware of.

The OWG will now be dismantled, transported roughly 1200 km south to the site and reassembled for launch. When that is done, it’ll become the city’s second such metro bridge after the 105m long steel truss bridge at Guindy launched by Larsen & Toubro in 2015.

Back in April 2022, HCC – KEC JV had launched the entire Phase 2 project’s first U-girder near Ramchandra Hospital Station’s site. In December, they had completed 50% of pier cap erection.

Here’s a cool recent shot of the viaduct, shared by HCC, right in front of Ramchandra Hospital:
