Following the virtual inauguration of construction work last week, Afcons Infrastructure and Ranjit Buildcon – both civil contractors of Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 – have started barricading sites and deploying machinery for the project’s construction at at least two spots along its route towards Gandhinagar.

Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 is 28.25 km long and comprises of two elevated corridors as an extension of the Phase 1’s 18.522 km Line-2 (Red Line), northwards from Motera Cricket Stadium towards GNLU and onward to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. At GNLU Station, a short 5.42 km spur line will connect to GIFT City across the Sabarmati River.

Corridors Length (KM) Stations

Two contracts for Phase 2’s construction were awarded to Afcons Infrastructure (14.36 km Package C1) and to Ranjit Buildcon (6.478 km Package C2) in Q4 2020 after a tender process that saw 12 bidders submitting a total of 17 bids.

Tender notices for a new train depot at Infocity and the line’s final 8.2 km section, between Sector-10A and Mahatma Mandir, is currently pending.

Package C1 – Afcons

Follower Biren Patel on Twitter spotted barricades and a piling rig deployed by Afcons Infra at Amiyapur Village, just south of the Narmada Canal. Tapovan Station’s site is planned hereabouts.

Looking at the loose soil – it appears a test or ceremonial bore has taken place. Proper piling work is expected to start in the coming weeks.

Afcons’ 14.36 km Package C1 includes the line’s 8.124 km elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU with 8 stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

It also includes the 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City with a bridge over Sabarmati River and 2 stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Package C2- Ranjit

Follower Alex Dravid on Twitter spotted barricades setup by Ranjit Buildcon for the line’s alignment between GNLU and Gandhinagar’s Sector-1.

Their 6.487 km package includes 5 stations at Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, and Sector-1. A small 0.679 km ramp will be built leading to a new depot at Indroda Circle.

As shared earlier – So far roughly 6 km out of 39.259 km in Phase 1 has become operational due to a host of reasons, so Ahmedabad has now joined Bengaluru (2015-2017) in becoming the only two cities where two phases have or are being developed simultaneously.
