Bids Invited for Bangalore Metro Phase 2’s 72 Coach Contract

With the execution of CRRC’s 216 coach contract going nowhere, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) on Friday invited tenders for procuring 72 new coaches for the 73.92 km Bangalore Metro Phase 2 project.

These 72 coaches (12 train-sets of 6 cars) will be deployed exclusively on the 19.143 km Yellow Line (Reach 5) which will connect RV Road – Bommasandra via 16 stations.

CRRC was originally awarded Bangalore Metro Phase 2’s 216 coach rolling stock contract in December 2019 and had committed to manufacture 204 coaches (34 trains) in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. A ground breaking ceremony had been conducted twice, but the firm failed to setup the plant or tie up with a local partner.

  • Contract: 6RS-DM
  • Completion Period: 243 weeks (4.66 years)
  • Pre-bid Meeting: May 23, 2022 at 11 AM
  • Submission Deadline: June 30, 2022 at 3 PM
  • Technical Bid Opening: June 30, 2022 at 3:30 PM

Brief Scope: Design, Manufacture, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 72 Nos. of Standard Gauge Metro Cars and Training of Personnel under Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited Project Phase -2

There’s no official confirmation of BMRCL having officially cancelled CRRC’s contract, but this tender notice serves as a good indicator of it being terminated.

BMRCL plans to deploy the 72 new coaches from this contract alongside 42 new coaches it will receive from BEML. At this time I don’t see the Yellow Line opening up anytime prior to Q4 2023.
