Tunnel Boring Machine 1239 operated by Doğuş-Soma JV on Tuesday afternoon arrived at Mumbai Central Station on Mumbai Metro’s upcoming 33.5 km Line-3 (Aqua Line).

Nicknamed Tansa 2, this was TBM 1239’s 3nd (and final) breakthrough, and Doğuş-Soma JV’s 5th of 6 breakthroughs planned for package UGC-03 (Worli – Mumbai Central)’s tunnels. Overall, this was Line-3’s 41st of 42 planned TBM breakthroughs.

This Ø6.65m Robbins slurry machine had previously achieved a breakthrough at Mahalaxmi Station in July 2021. It was then was recommissioned in October 2021 for its final assignment to build the 832m down-line tunnel towards Mumbai Central Station.

With this development, tunneling for Line-3’s down-line is complete – all the way from Colaba in the south to Sariput Nagar Ramp, near Aarey Colony Station, in the north.

Line-3 now just has 1TBM working from an all time high of 17. A total of 41 breakthroughs have been recorded so far with just 1 more pending – again on Package UGC-03. I’m trying to ascertain Tansa-1’s status and will update this section when I hear something.

Here’s a table displaying UGC-03’s tunneling plan and status of each tunnel (best viewed on a desktop device).
