J Kumar Infraprojects (JKIL) on Saturday poured concrete to cast their first segment for Shunya cable-stayed bridge of Mumbai Metro’s 23.6 km Line-2B (Yellow Line) in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

This 130 meter long “iconic” bridge, as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) likes to call it, will support the viaduct of Mumbai Metro’s Yellow Line over Vakola Nala between Income Tax Office and ILFS stations (view site on Google maps).

Shunya Bridge on 12.824 km Package L2B-C101 will consist of a 80 meter long main span, 50 meter long anchor span, and one giant pylon (pier #478) where concrete was poured to build its pile cap in October 2023.

The bridge will consist of 35 precast segments, each 12.9m wide, cast at a yard located right across from the 508 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train project’s BKC Station site which is under construction by HCC – MEIL JV.

MMRDA had awarded J Kumar Infraprojects with Line-2B’s Package L2B-C101 in May 2021 with a contract value of Rs. 1307.88 crore and 30 month deadline.

This is a retender of Package CA-04R, previously awarded to Simplex Infrastructure, for the balance construction of the viaduct and 10 stations between ESIC Nagar and IL&FS (from chainage 34035.873m to 46860.384).

Back in 2020, MMRDA revealed the concept of this bridge ‘Shunya’ is derived from the historic invention of ‘zero’ in India in the 5th century. The bridge is designed as an ode to the immense significance of ‘zero’ in the technological world.
