Pune Metro’s PCMC – Nigdi Extension Approved by MoHUA

[ad_1]

The Central Government’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved a 4.413 km elevated extension of Pune Metro’s 16.589 km Purple Line from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Nigdi.

This northern extension by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) is officially named “Phase 1A”. It is estimated to cost Rs. 910.18 crore and includes the construction of 3 elevated stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi and Nigdi.

The project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) was approved by Maharashtra’s government in February 2021 and received sanction from the Public Investment Board (PIB) in September 2023.

Maha-Metro in September invited bids for appointing this extension’s Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) with a technical bid opening date of October 27. Within the pre-bid queries document it clarifies that no new depot will be built – contrary to what the DPR had recommended at Nigdi.

If the DDC is appointed by year-end, then I envision seeing PCMC – Nigdi extension’s civil construction tender notice getting published around mid-2024, depending on how quickly the design is prepared.

This extension and the 5.46 km Swargate – Katraj extension were included in the Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti mission in February 2023. A similar approval from the MoHUA for that southern extension of the Purple Line is still pending.
