L&T Launches Chennai Metro Line-5 CP-10-EV-03’s 1st U-Girder
Larsen & Toubro on Thursday morning launched their 1st pair of U-girders for Chennai Metro Line-5’s 10.2 km CMBT – Venugopal Nagar section (Package CP10-EV-03)
This package-level milestone was recorded on top of piers P184 – P185 at Shastri Nagar using 25m long U-girders weighing approximately 150 MT each.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) had awarded L&T with 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project’s Rs. 1590 crore contract for Package CP10-EV-03 in November 2021 with a 36 month deadline.
The firm had cast their first U-girder at Karanodai Casting Yard (view on Google Maps) in July 2022 from where I estimate approximately 720 girders will be cast.

L&T’s package consists of 1 underground (Venugopal Nagar) and 11 elevated stations at the northern-end of the 47 km Line-5 which will connect Madhavaram – Sholinganallur through 48 stations.
It consists of 2 disjointed sections on either side of the underground Package UG6 (Kolathur – Nathamnuni) for which re-bidding is currently underway with a submission deadline of May 2, 2023.
The two sections and other infra in their scope includes:
- CMBT to Nathamuni Ramp – 5 stations at CMBT, Kaliamman Koil Street Junction, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Thirumangalam & Anna Nagar Depot
- Retteri Ramp to Venugopal Nagar – 7 stations at Retteri Junction, Shastri Nagar, MMBT, Velmurugan Nagar, Manjambakkam, Assisi Nagar & Venugopal Nagar (underground)
- 1.5 km depot-line to lines 3 & 5’s Madhavaram Depot under construction by URCC
- Cut & cover section between Assisi Nagar Ramp and Venugopal Nagar
